What White Balance ?

I have been ripping my hair out lately about whitebalance, I know how to set it and all but what is bugging me is that custom white balances tend to suck the life out of the image making them too blue, however the camera presets make them too yellow. It is a dilema for me because I want to be accurate but sometimes I dont want to loose the warm feel either.
